The Positive Effect of Pay It Forward
Is the internal focus that we've grown accustomed to causing us to miss out on the world around us? It seems that everywhere I look, we as a society are so busy trying to get ahead in our own lives that is has become a culture of me, me, me. While there's nothing inherently wrong with getting what you want out of life, its crucial to find the balance.
We are all connected and no man (or woman) is an island to themselves. We never know the struggle that others are going through or the burdens that our fellow humans are forced to bear. This is where paying it forward comes in to play. And, no, I'm not talking about the movie. Although it was a good movie right up until the end and because the end totally devastated me, I will probably never watch it again...but I digress.
When you do random acts of kindness, you create a spark. It's quite exciting to see. Some people who are on the receiving end automatically light up, others may take a little while to process what just happened. Either way, you have just started something beautiful! When someone receives a random act of kindness from a stranger, they (even if just temporarily) feel a little lighter. Gratefulness takes hold in their hearts. They have feelings of abundance.
This generally leads to them wanting to do something for someone else. And, eventually you have a chain reaction of small acts of kindness being paid forward sweeping a sense of positivity through an entire area! This creates a sense of community, of loving one another, of looking out for each other. This is the very foundation of having a successful society.
These acts of kindness do not have to be grand gestures, honestly its better if they're not. They can be little things like paying for someone's breakfast, helping someone carry their groceries to their car, helping someone move, something as simple as giving a genuine compliment can spread positivity in powerful ways. The possibilities are endless, so be creative. But do something, don't wait for when you have more time, or money, or the moment is "just right".
Not only does society as a whole benefit from the effects of paying it forward, but so do you. When people are experiencing gratitude, they are automatically drawing more things in their life to be grateful for. It becomes a domino effect of abundance and its quite exciting to see!
What are some random acts of kindness that you like to do and what are you planning to do next? What is a recent one that you've received?
