# RainesReveals How Comparing Hurts Our Kids
As a society, we are quick to assume an issue instead of accepting a difference.
It seems that children are constantly being compared to each other and this can have devastating consequences. As the new school year begins, lets take a look at the details surrounding this issue.
It's easy to become overwhelmed as a parent and when we see other parents who seemingly don't deal with any of the things that we do, it can be easy to wonder if what we are experiencing is normal. Add in that it seems everyone is determined to turn their child into a protege, so there's some serious competition in the mix as well.
I see so many parents who have their very young children in multiple, structured activities. Then, when the child is overwhelmed and starts underperforming, words like disorder and deficent are thrown around. Its crucial that we allow our children to be children. A few activities can be wonderful, but the majority of the week filled with activity after activity can actually be harmful.
There's a reason that there's a range for everything with children. I get it, we all want our children to be at the highest percentage of the range, but that would eliminate it altogether. Children develop at different stages and learn in different ways. We should be cautious to label using words such as struggling or late with something just because other children may have already mastered it. This can cause our children to feel inadequate and cause cause a multitude of issues later on.
If a child is constantly given the impression that they are behind or that there's something wrong with them, they will accept that as their reality. They can start to own these realities and underperform consistently because they believe that they are limited.
I'll share a story of how easily children get compared and labeled. My child is shy and does not always feel comfortable speaking to strangers. A woman assumed that she was having speach issues because she didn't hear her speak. She even went as far as suggesting speach therapy. I tried to explain that she's shy, but it fell on deaf ears.
I did not believe that my child had any speach issues and didn't allow myself to be influenced by someone who didn't even know my child. Months later it was confirmed by the doctor that my child was actually very advanced in her speech. If I had've been insecure or unsure of myself and my child, I could have possibly insisted my child be in therapy needlessly, treated her as if she had an issue and created a real one in the process.
We need to be very careful with labeling our children and should probably avoid labeling other children entirely. Lets celebrate our children for the wonders that they are instead of constantly analyzing and comparing. Our children don't thrive under that pressure and it causes more damage than any possible conceived benefit. Lets support all children in their unique and individual journeys through life!
